Organization of the School and practical information

At the University of Trieste the Ph D Schools were first established in 2006. The Ph. D. School in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies derives from the merging of preceding Ph D Courses in Chemical Sciences, in Pharmaceutical Sciences, and in Chemical Engineering established in the '80s. Every year on January 1st the School starts a new Cycle. The first Cycle of the School (Cycle XXII) started on January 1st 2007.

The duration of the Ph D programme is 3 years. The candidates are selected (usually in November every year) by a Commission. The selection involves the evaluation of the CV and an interview. Applicants from every Country are welcome, provided that they have an undergraduate degree comparable to the Italian 'Laurea Specialistica'. Applications must be submitted on line in summer; for details see the bilingual website of the University of Trieste and the expressly-made file 'Ph D application for dummies' in this webpage.

At the end of the Ph D programme, each student writes a thesis, preferably in English, on the scientific results of the research project. The thesis is defended in front of an external commission made by Italian, and occasionally also foreign, experts. Students who want to have the 'Doctor Europeus' certification must spend at least three consecutive months abroad and write their thesis in English. In this case, the presence of a foreign professor in the defense commission is required and the discussion will be done in English.

As described in more detail elsewhere, the Ph D programme comprises both didactic and scientific aspects. Each student, besides pursuing his/her research project, is expected to attend a number of classes and seminars. The Board of Professors of the School appoints a supervisor for each Ph D student. The supervisor is responsible for the scientific project and also for designing, together with the student, an appropriate didactic programme. The supervisor also provides adequate scientific facilities and financial support for the research activities of the student.

Very often the research projects pursued within the School are part of international collaborations. Accordingly, the students are encouraged to perform part of their research project (max 18 months) in a collaborating foreign scientific Institution. They are also encouraged to attend at least one national or international Symposium each year, presenting a scientific contribution.
