Group of Applied Coordination and Organometallic Chemistry

The group comprises 4 members with permanent positions and a variable number – typically from 2 to 8 – of master and Ph D students in chemistry, and postdoctoral fellows.
B Sc students in chemistry occasionally join the group for short research projects.

The current research interests of the group are all in the field of solution inorganic chemistry. In particular, there are three main research lines:

These research lines have a common background: the preparation and characterization of new coordination and organometallic compounds, and the assessment of their solution behavior and reactivity. Solid state structure determinations and theoretical calculations are also performed in-house (Gabriele Balducci).

The two laboratories of the group are mainly devoted to the synthetic aspects (i.e. ligands and metal compounds), and to homogeneous catalysis. The solution investigation is performed mainly through NMR spectroscopy, using the spectrometers available in the Department.

Beside several national and international collaborations, detailed in the page of each research line, the group has strong and fruitful collaborations within the Department: Tatiana Da Ros (rhenium-fullerene conjugates), Paolo Fornasiero (GC-mass analysis of products of catalytic reactions), Teresa Gianferrara (ruthenium-porphyrin conjugates), Maurizio Prato (photoinduced water splitting), Paolo Tecilla (artificial metal-based ion channels), Ennio Zangrando (X-ray structure determination).

Keywords: ruthenium, palladium, rhenium, osmium, alkene, polar monomer, homogeneous catalysis, polymer, co-polymer, nitrogen-donor ligands, dimethylsulfoxide, anticancer, porphyrin, supramolecular, metal-mediated self-assembly, artificial photosynthesis, energy transfer, electron transfer, photocatalysis, light-harvesting.
